My Space
This entry is for those individuals who work in crowded offices or work on teams…this even works at home. One way to give feedback is to use this commonly accepted acronym in the field of training and consulting. The acronym F.O.R.M.S. is a helpful tool when trying to make feedback more effective. It stands for: Factual, Observable, Reliable, Measurable and Specific (unknown original creator of this acronym.)
Factual
When you give feedback, be sure to collect all relevant (and even some unrelated information if it can be helpful) data and facts before entering into a discussion. Greater conflict can be generated by acting, reacting or giving feedback that is based in inaccuracies.
Observable
Be sure to include observable behaviors that you did or did not witness that are related to the issue at hand. It may not be acceptable to respond to an issue that you have not ever witnessed from 1st person perspective. Also, it brings credibility to our communication when the other individual knows that we have observed the issue at hand.
Reliable
Consistency and trustworthiness is important to everyone and these elements are critical when providing feedback.
Measurable
Be sure that you are using established, pre-determined ways to assess and gauge performance levels. Measurement should not be seen as an ‘extra’ when providing feedback, training or professional development.
Specific
Feedback that is not specific will only create resentment, more questions and conflict. Telling someone, “it isn’t good enough” or “you could do it better” does nothing for either party other than increase frustration and inefficiency.
